W’s Salon

W’s Salon was a small, but popular hairstylist in San Jose’s upscale Santana Row shopping area. When the adjoining commercial space became available, W’s owner decided to expand his business and hired O+A to direct the makeover. Two initiatives drove our design: first to open up space and simplify flow at a company rapidly outgrowing its facility; second to give the shop an urban elegance equal to the elegance of its service.
We interviewed W’s owner and stylists to understand how their work was conducted. Applying that data we created a space plan that cut paths between the two storefronts while maintaining distinct functions for each: reception and product placement in one half of the shop; styling and customer care in the other. The resulting layout facilitates the work performed in each area, increases efficiency and makes both spaces more comfortable for staff and clients alike.
Any business predicated on style must look the part. Our finish selections for W’s Salon strike a careful balance between luxury and edge. The seating in the styling area, the black and gray accents, the art, the mirrors, the industrial facade all contribute to an aesthetic of rich austerity. The final touch is natural light, abundantly supplied by two large windows that make of every cut and wash—a performance!
